Know My Name, knitted squares, embroidery, printed fabric. Exhibited as part of What Women Hold exhibition at the Kerry Packer Civic Gallery, November 2024- January 30 2025.
Know My Name is a collaborative piece made by Claire and Miranda Harris with women at Catherine House over 12 months. The piece acknowledges Australian women who were murdered in 2024 by male violence. Making this piece took considerable time and energy; collectively we are entangled with these unfinished threads.
The knitted squares were made by women from Adelaide Prison with additional knitting by community volunteers who responded to an Art Bus call out. We began embroidering the names at the start of 2024.
The title of the work came from discussions amongst the group of women at Catherine House who participated in a 12 month visual art program run by Claire and Miranda Harris. The words, 'hear my name, know my name, say my name' are screen printed onto the backing fabric.
